5 Key Techniques for Shifting Gears on a Bicycle

Do you know how to shift gears? On different terrains, we should use gear changes to maintain our cadence. Here are a few techniques that need special attention——

Do not shift gears before pedaling. Instead, shift gears while you are pedaling.

Before standing up to pedal (also known as “dancing on the pedals”), choose a higher gear. This is because standing up puts more pressure on the pedals, and a gear that is too low can lead to the chain slipping.

Before completing a turn where you have to slow down continuously, switch to a lower gear. This makes it easier to accelerate once you’re back on a straight path.

If you don’t want to replace your chain, avoid freewheeling right after shifting gears.

Before stopping, shift to a lower gear. This makes it easier to start again. If you forget to shift gears before stopping, you can hold the front brake, lift the rear wheel, and use one foot to pedal and shift gears.
